Course Overview

Venipuncture is one of the most common procedures performed by veterinary technicians — but it’s also one of the most variable. Patient size, temperament, hydration status, and species differences can make a “simple” blood draw anything but simple.
This course focuses on advanced, real-world strategies for collecting high-quality blood samples in challenging situations while ensuring safety for both the patient and veterinary team.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify alternate venipuncture sites and their appropriate use in dogs, cats, and select exotic species.

  2. Apply modified restraint techniques to safely manage uncooperative or stressed patients.

  3. Utilize visualization and palpation strategies to locate veins in difficult patients.

  4. Prevent sample hemolysis and clotting through correct technique and handling.

  5. Troubleshoot failed venipuncture attempts with minimal patient stress.
